After a huge disappointment using Pedipaws, I decided to try this to see if really works good for large dogs like some of the reviews said. Boy, I wish I knew about this earlier! I thought they'll get scared of the sound like dentist, but they aren't as scared as I thought they'll get. Actually they are not scared but generally disliking the nail cutting/filing. It doesn't seem like it bothers them much while I use this, unlike the nail clipper. Only thing you'll have to be careful is that you'll have to avoid the file to touch the paw pads as it tends to get hot to touch. You can adjust the speed by just turning a knob, and changing the file is just slide in and out. I found it sometimes difficult to replace the file, though, as it fits very tight. It comes with a long power cord so you can chase your dog to use it, but it would be a lot easier if it's rechargeable cordless. For this price, I don't have complain, and actually I use it for other DIY projects around the house. Great stuff!

I have had two of these. I really liked the way it feels in my hand, and the fact that it is electric. It is much nicer than the Oster electric nail grinder, and I think it is a little bit more quiet. I bought this because the Dremel cordless only lasts me through maybe 3 dogs at my salon before I have to switch out and recharge, and sometimes only lasts me through one nail grind on a large breed, for ex a Mastiff-VERY inconvenient and inefficient, a problem that was solved by using an electric grinder. Unfortunately, the Master Grooming Tools nail grinder has a faulty resistor. My first one I had for a little under a year before it started getting sluggish and turning off at random. A week after the symptoms, it died. I didn't save the receipt, stupidly, because there is a one yr warranty (Which doesn't cover "normal wear and tear" btw, and they would have classified my problem under that according to the service rep I spoke to after the fact). Well, I bought a second one in January, and the first week of March I took it out to use and it just didn't turn onno signs of dying this time. I called the company I ordered it from to ask if I could just exchange this for the cordless Dremel, and they were nice enough to do so. Refunded me my money, told me to keep it (instead of sending it back and having to pay shipping on that) and then sent me the Dremel, free of service charge. (Kudos Petedge for great customer service!)While I still prefer this electric grinder over the cordless Dremel, I can't be out a tool for a week or two at a time. My handyman took my two broken Master Grooming Tools apart and the resistor was completely fryed (oddly, on my new one) and dislodged on my older one. Good thing that came out of thishe just reconnected the resistor on my older one and it works againfor how long, we shall see.

In Electrical Engineering, they teach you about different motor configurations which optimize on different aspects. This particular nail grinder has a motor optimized for high speed, rather than torque, the significance of this being that a lower spin speed is less distressing for the dog. You can also push a higher torque motor a little harder against the nails without it slowing down lots, rather than really having to crank the speed up and just tap it gently many, many times (if you just hold it against the nail, the friction will heat up the nail and be uncomfortable for the dog). The advantage of a low-torque motor is that if hair does get caught in the motor, it stops without pulling hard on the fur.

So, the good:

1) The cord means it never runs out of batteries mid-trim, and over longer periods of time doesn't result in batteries slowly dying. The cord is actually long enough too.

2) The dremel bits are awesome, no complaints there. I have never used the polisher and doubt I ever will.

3) The control is quite good, and it has a clip as well as an independent power control (so you can set the RPM once, then leave it there and just use the power switch).

The bad:

1) The spin setting seems utterly useless below 2/3 max power because the motor torque is so low. I typically use it on 80% max power.

2) It spins up to high speed, but that distresses the dog greatly as the higher pitch annoys her. The speed control does not seem to be linear either; the jump in RPM from 80% to 90% is higher than 40% to 50%, which can make it difficult to get the sweet spot for the dog's comfort and ease of use.

3) The motor is too low torque to work well at low speeds; I previously had a battery only model that operated at a lower spin with higher torque and that was a lot more usable.

Given it is what I have right now, I'll use it until it breaks, but I'm not sure I would buy it again. Best tip for using it? Set it on 80%, and tap the nail gently and repeatedly.

I am a mobile groomer and my cordless one kept loosing its charge since I have to turn off and on the power of the van as I work. I finally gave in and got this grinder and WOW! I was afraid I'd grind off the dogs foot it was so powerful! However, it really only works at the highest speed. Any lower and the motor just stops as soon as it hits the nail, even on smaller dogs. The highest speed however grinds the nails down quick and fast, even the big guys like Danes and Mastiffs.

Our small dog HATES getting his nails clipped or even touched. We didn't like spending money every month for having his nails barely clipped or getting his quicks cut. We have had this product a few months now and so far, so good. I like the quality of this machine. The speed dial and all the different heads are nice. I liked that it is not cordless so I don't have to worry about it dying on me. I don't think it's too loud. My dog seems too tolerate it too. His nails are one hundred times better.
