I have two yorkies at home who can be quite noisy when they want to be. It can be very frustrating when the mailman arrives or kids are out at the bus stop, the girls will go nuts barking up a storm. I've been trying to find an option that might work to correct their behavior and have been hesitant to try bark control collars because of both the cost and the fact that even the small ones are huge when compared to my teacup sized yorkies. I even tried a cheap ultrasonic bark control device before that I found on an end cap at a local pet store, but it just didn't work.

Then last week I stumbled across this bark control device by First Alert in the pet department at a major retailer. I've known and trusted First Alert for smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in the past. So I figured they likely would've brought their same engineering quality to this device. My quick searches with my smart phone while in-store couldn't come up with any online reviews for the device. So I thought it probably was new. But, knowing the First Alert brand I decided to give it a shot.

The device is a simple black box with a microphone, speaker, and LED light on the front. The one side has a dial type switch to turn the device on and select the appropriate level of sensitivity. There's even a test mode that lets you speak the word "bark" to see if the device is working. The whole thing is powered by a 9 volt battery (not included) which you place in a compartment in the base. There is a recessed hanger on the back that will fit over a screw so you can mount the device to the wall. There is also a strap on the top that you can use to carry the device or hanging it on a hook.

After firing it up the first time I left it on a table in the living room and went about the house. A while later as I was standing in the bathroom brushing my teeth I looked out to see little Ethel watching me from a few yards away. Something caught her attention outside and she started barking. Within three barks she suddenly stared at the table where the bark control box was and then sprinted into the bathroom to hide by my feet.

Today as I worked from home Lucy heard the mailman outside and she started in on her barking with Ethel following suit a few moments later. I reached over and turned the bark control device on. Within moments of doing so they both stopped and Lucy fled to the kitchen to hide in the corner by the fridge while Ethel came over to sit by me looking up at me for comfort.

Obviously it is working. Perhaps a little too well since my girls are cowering from it. I intend right now to only turn it on when I'm around the house and can comfort the girls when it goes off. I want them to know that the barking needs to stop but that they're still ok. Hopefully they'll learn that their barking is what is setting it off, I want them to continue being happy healthy pups. I just also want the barking to stop, especially since my fiance works nights and she needs to be able to sleep during the day.

The product did work with the first bark as soon as it was turned on, however, the bark box went off with every noise, giving off the transmitted sound. This obvious sends the wrong message. There are 6 people in our family so the house can be noisy, but even talking set it off. I think we will try the remote anti-bark product.
