Our 16-year old cat has recently decided that the proper time for breakfast is 4:00 a.m. He shares this conclusion with us by yowling rather loudly. As a consequence, we have had our nights cut short -night after night. I searched the web for an automatic cat feeder and found several options. The reviews I read of them were mixed. Some purchasers loved the items they had bought; others found them to be poorly built and unreliable. It was with some apprehension that I ordered the Cat Mate C10.

It works wonderfully well. Powered by a AA battery (that, according to the directions, should last a year) it does exactly as advertised. To give it a test run, I set the timer for two hours. Two hours and two minutes later it opened. I'm amazed and delighted. So is our cat. This morning he was (a) fed and (b) quiet. Huzzah!

I have been using the C10 and C20 cat mate timer dishes for years. It makes it very convenient to feed your cat a few meals at given times per day, especially in the middle of the night when my cat likes to wake me up for food. However, it is not perfect in that if it is within an hour of her feeding time, my cat can push the closed lid to the side and open it. So if you want the dish to open at very exact times, this is not the dish for you. If you don't mind if our cat can get to the food within an hour earlier, then it will work fine.

The other thing is that the dishes are plastic. Yes, they can come out and be washed in the dishwasher, but if your cat suffers from cat acne or conditions like Eosinophilic Granuloma (allergic skin condition), vets recommend that you feed cats from stainless steel or ceramic bowls only. This is because plastic scratches easily, and bacteria can get in the scratches that even a dishwasher cannot remove, thereby flaring up these skin conditions when your cat's face touches the surface as she eats. This is the only reason why I will have to stop using these dishes, unfortunately. I wish they made stainless steel bowl replacements. Otherwise, this is a great product.

I ordered this thinking it was the same as the C20, but with just one dish. I have used the C20 before, and it worked great. However, this model does not have an ice pack, which I was not aware of when I bought it. If you are feeding dry food, it should work just fine. But I do not want to leave canned food out to spoil, so I returned it and bought a C20 instead. Just make sure you are aware that this does not have an ice pack or a place to put one. If you are okay with that, then you will probably like this feeder.

I originally decided to try a timed feeder when I had to go out of town. My cats eat 4 times/day and I could not afford a sitter to come that often. I bought 2 of these (one per cat) so she could come twice, feed them and set the feeders for the other 2 times.

I have since started using them for the AM feeding since they started crawling all over me at 5am to be fed.

It works pretty well. It's easy to set BUT there is no battery compartment cover and the battery doesn't always stay in well--especially with frisky kitties playing with the silly thing. This causes the timer to stop and the feeder to not open.

I have tried taping it, but that doesn't always hold the battery in securely either.

Twice in the last few weeks, I have gone into the kitchen in the morning to find the feeder has not opened. It's a bit frustrating.

It comes with a large plastic dish. I choose to use stainless steel ones. I found that small round ones fit nicely. Not only does this avoid plastic but also provides a bunch more dishes so I (and the pet sitter) don't have to watch them every time.

If you feed canned or raw food and are concerned about leaving it out, I've not had a problem. I have recently started frezing 'patties' of the right amount of food; this way, I (or the sitter) can simply drop one in each timer and when it opens 4-6 hours later, it's fine for them to eat.

UPDATE: Battery hasn't fallen out in over a week. They haven't moved in 3 days! My plan was to get a non-slip mat and then velcro the feeders to it (so I could still pick them up to clean and change the battery). However, I only got as far as the mat and Patsy hasn't knocked them around enough to make the battery fall out.

I bought a solid non-slip shelf liner from Bed,Bath, and Beyond (5 feet x 18 inches; washable).

I've had 2 of these auto feeders for over 3 months now, and this is exactly what I needed, for my two cats. I set it before I leave for work with some dry food in it, and if I get home late, they're fed for the night! I also have a water fountain feeder for them, so they're all set in case I'm late for dinner! I did not buy the cold pack accessory, but I'm thinking of trying it to use wet food with it. It takes AA batteries, and you can set it for anytime over a 24 hour period. My one cat is pretty clever, and tries to break into it when he hears me pour his dry food into it. The first few times I set it, I noticed his attempts, and stopped him. I have yet to come home to a disassembled unit :)

I would recommend that you try it out, and for the first time you set it, be home when it is set to open to make sure that you're cat doesn't break into it, and that it does in fact open. I havent had any problems with mine. In fact, it is very easy to clean as well, the white tray comes out for easy cleaning, and replacement. The only problem is that when they are not in use, you cannot close the lid without setting the time, and if you have batteries in it, that means it will pop open when the time is up. I don't close the lids when in storage, but this could be a problem for people with limited storage space.
